What is the 52-week savings challenge?

The classic 52-week money challenge is simple: save $1 in week one, $2 in week two, $3 in week three, and so on until you save $52 in week 52. By the end of the year you've saved $1,378 without ever having to find a big lump sum. Each week's deposit is small, and the habit builds as the amounts grow.

This generator lets you change the rules to fit your budget. Start at $5 and add $5 a week and you'll save $6,890. Prefer a flat amount? Saving $20 every week gives you $1,040. Have a target in mind? Type a goal and press Fit to goal, and the calculator finds the weekly increase that gets you there.

Increasing, reverse or fixed: which version is best?

  • Increasing (classic): easy start, harder finish. The last weeks fall in November and December if you start in January, which is exactly when holiday spending peaks.
  • Decreasing (reverse): the same total, but the biggest deposits come first while your motivation is high. Many people find it easier to finish.
  • Fixed: the same amount every week. It's the most predictable and simple to automate with a recurring transfer.

The math behind the increasing version: with a first deposit a and a weekly step d, the total is 52 × a + 1,326 × d. That's how the goal fitter works.

How to actually finish the challenge

  • Automate it. Set up a weekly transfer to a separate high-yield savings account. Update the amount once a month, or switch to the fixed version so it never changes.
  • Check off every week. Tick the box next to each week above. Your progress is saved in this browser, so you can come back any time.
  • Print it. A paper chart on the fridge is a surprisingly strong reminder. The print button gives you a clean table without the rest of the page.
  • Irregular income? Do several weeks at once in a good month. Some freelancers pick weeks out of order: the big ones in strong months and the small ones in slow months.
  • Give the money a job. Savings stick better with a purpose: an emergency buffer, a tax cushion or a trip. If you're paying off debt, compare the payoff with the debt snowball calculator before choosing where extra money goes.

Frequently asked questions

How much do you save with the 52-week challenge?

The classic version ($1 in week 1 up to $52 in week 52) saves $1,378. Doubling every amount saves $2,756, and the $5-step version saves $6,890.

Can I start the 52-week challenge in the middle of the year?

Yes. Pick any start date and the schedule shows the real date for every week. There's nothing special about January.

What's the reverse 52-week challenge?

It's the same schedule backwards: you start with the largest deposit and finish with the smallest. The total is identical, but the hardest weeks come first.

Are my check-offs saved?

Yes, in your browser's local storage on this device. They aren't uploaded anywhere. Clearing your browser data will remove them.

Where should I keep the money?

A separate savings account, ideally a high-yield one, works best, so the money isn't mixed with spending and can earn some interest.
